With deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance, we honor the life of Amanda Marie Burwell Prater, age 52, of Mattoon, who passed away on March 30, 2026, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital. Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and all who were blessed to know her.
Amanda was born on July 2, 1973, in Mattoon to Harold Eugene and Brenda Faye (Lawyer) Burwell. She built a life rooted in love, dedication, and strong family values. On December 31, 1994, she married James “Jim” Roy Prater, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with shared memories, commitment, and devotion.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim; her children, TJ (Jamie) Prater, Allison (Ian) Fauke, Asher Prater, and Arabella Prater; and her cherished grandson, Matthew Prater. She also leaves behind her sister, Rebecca Coon, along with many extended family members and friends who will carry her memory forward. Amanda was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Ella Lawyer, and her father-in-law, Roy Prater.
Professionally, Amanda served as Vice President of the Area Educational Credit Union, where she was respected for her leadership, dedication, and care for others. She approached her work with integrity and compassion, building lasting relationships with colleagues and members alike.
Outside of her career, Amanda found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved camping, watching crime documentaries, and spending time with her beloved pets. Known for her kind heart and generous spirit, she was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer support to those in need. Her warmth, loyalty, and sense of humor made her a bright light in the lives of many. And in the small, everyday moments—like enjoying a Diet Cherry Coke—she found happiness worth celebrating.
Above all, Amanda’s greatest love was her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children and grandson, holding them at the center of her world. Her legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering devotion.
A funeral service honoring Amanda’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Schilling Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date.
