David Wayne Lay, Westminster, Obtuary, Death: In Loving Memory of David Wayne Lay, Whose Life Was Tragically Taken

With heavy hearts, the community of Westminster mourns the tragic and heartbreaking loss of David Wayne Lay, a 63-year-old man whose life was taken far too soon in the early hours of Tuesday morning. His passing has left a deep sense of sorrow not only among his loved ones but across Oconee County, where he was known and where his absence will be profoundly felt.

According to officials, the devastating incident occurred at approximately 1:55 a.m. along Highway 76/123 (Sandifer Boulevard), near Seed Farm Road, just outside Westminster. David was believed to be walking toward Seneca at the time—simply moving through the quiet of the night—when he was struck in a tragic hit-and-run collision. The vehicle involved fled the scene, leaving behind a life lost and a community shaken.

He was later discovered by a deputy with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office during a routine patrol. It quickly became clear that David had suffered severe injuries in a pedestrian versus vehicle incident. Despite the response, his life could not be saved, and the weight of that moment now lingers in the hearts of those who knew him.

David Wayne Lay was more than the circumstances of his passing—he was a man who had lived a full life of 63 years, shaped by experiences, relationships, and meaningful moments. To those who knew him, he was a familiar and valued presence—a friend, a neighbor, and a loved one whose absence now leaves an irreplaceable void.

In times like these, it is often the simplest memories that carry the greatest weight—the conversations shared, the routines once taken for granted, and the quiet presence that brought comfort to others. These are the moments that now keep David’s spirit alive in the hearts of those who mourn him.

His tragic passing serves as a painful reminder of life’s fragility and the responsibility we all share on the roads. As the South Carolina Highway Patrol continues its investigation, there remains hope that answers will come and that justice will be pursued.

To his family and loved ones, may you find strength in one another and comfort in the memories you hold close. Though words cannot ease this loss, may the love surrounding you bring some measure of peace.

Rest in peace, David Wayne Lay.
You will be deeply missed and never forgotten. 🕊️
